Important lesson learned from radishes

I had the best radish crop this year—ever!

Each and every year I plant radishes in my garden; I’m partial to the French breakfast variety. I love her long, slender elegance, edible greens and subtle sweetness.

Oh…sorry…I was dreaming of thinly slicing my little babies, sliding them onto a salad of butter leaf lettuce, and drizzling this beautiful composition with a lemon vinaigrette…

Where was I? Right. My radish crop.

If you’ve ever planted radishes, you know the seeds are teeny tiny, and dark brown, like the soil, so that when you sow your seeds, unless you have your readers on 🤓, it can be really hard to see how many you have planted and how far apart you’ve planted them.

This fact coupled with my general distrust that such a teeny weeny little thing will actually grow into such a glorious miracle, always leads me to put too many seeds into the narrow little row.

Now, if you’re a gardener, you know what this means: when the seeds come up - and perhaps just to spite me and my lack of faith - you have a bazillion little radish sprouts, happily jumping out of the darkness into the light.

Here’s where you want to pay attention

If you don’t thin your radish sprouts, you won’t get radishes!

Here’s where you want to pay attention even if you don’t like radishes

I know, you might be thinking: what does this have to do with me? I am not a gardener; I don’t even like radishes!

That’s okay, you don’t have to like radishes. However, I’m pretty sure you can employ this principle of thinning to other important areas of your life.

Such as:

  • Clearing the clutter on your kitchen counter so you can focus on preparing a lovely meal

  • Deleting your old boyfriends’ contacts from your phone, so when you want to “call Rob,” Siri picks the right guy

  • Fine tuning your radio dial so you have clear reception for the station you want to hear. I know I’m dating myself here…

It’s pretty cool, isn’t it? When you thin, clear, declutter, whatever you want to call it, you make room for what you really want.

There are many ways to do this, and one that I find most effective and profound, is with a dietary cleanse…not a fast, no juicing or supplements, just a good ole’ fashioned cleaning out of my diet.

Several times a year I take a break from booze, sugar, gluten, potato chips, and focus on eating real, whole food. It’s a way to clean out, literally and figuratively, so I can create some space. And from this clearer vantage, there’s room for what I really want to grow, flourish and prosper.

Won’t you join me?

My Banish the Bloat and Energize summer cleanse starts on July 18.

Happy thinning!
