Hello friends,
We are indeed living in difficult times. It seems that once one fire is out (literally and figuratively) another 10 flare up. I, for one, have been feeling very challenged—at times even hopeless and overwhelmed—by world events as well as with personal situations. This is life—an ever changing landscape.
So…what in the world do you do when you don’t know what to do?
Connect with what grounds you
This will be different for everyone. Here are three things that work for me:
1. Get out in nature
Rob, Sylvie and I recently explored a new-to-us corner of our new home state, near Smoky Mountain National Park. I was humbled by the quiet beauty of the mountains, reminded of the healing touch of Mother Nature, and grateful for the time to get my mind right.
Don’t live near the mountains? Find a park, a greenspace, or simply open your back door.
2. Start your day with intention
Since I’m a health coach and a yoga teacher, people often ask me how I start my day. I don’t naturally spring out of bed at 5am, but my morning pillar, what I call my morning routine, is instrumental to my sanity (and my relationship!) So I prioritize some quiet, solo time most mornings, before I check my phone/emails.
It changes with the seasons—we’re meant to ebb and flow with Mother Nature’s rhythms—and these days it might include:
Lemon water - a squeeze of fresh lemon juice in room temp water
Breathing & meditation—anywhere from 3-20 minutes, including a few rounds of kapalbhati pranayama, or skull shining breath
Sylvie cuddling
Movement of some sort - maybe yoga, a walk, or strength training
A bit of gardening - few things are as satisfying to me as pulling weeds and harvesting veggies for lunch!
The order may vary depending on the day, and I don’t always do all of the things.
I know what many of you may be thinking, “I don't have time for that!” I get it. Kids, dogs, jobs…Pick one thing. Find five minutes. The truth is everyone has the same 24 hours in every day, it’s what you choose to do with them.
3. Look for beauty
In spite of too much heartbreak, sadness and tragedy, there is still plenty of beauty in our world if we simply look around.
Turn off the news, put down your phone, and look for goodness. I promise, you will find whatever it is that you’re looking for. Look for doom and gloom and you will find it. Look for even one small, tiny miracle and you will find that too.
Love,
Lisa & Sylvie
